Four buses piled on top of each other outside Lima, Peru yesterday. The first one hit a ditch then flipped. The second one hit the same ditch then flipped on top of the first one. The third one was coming from the opposite direction, swerved to try to avoid the pile-up, and wound up skidding, fishtailing, and ultimately flipping into the air and on top of the first two. The fourth one was also coming from the opposite direction and didn’t make an effort to swerve, but did hit the brakes at the precise moment at which its brakes, according to authorities, “just happened” to give out. All told, 300 passengers, four drivers, and one driver’s assistant lost their lives.
