Profiteers have crowded bus crash scenes since the advent of diesel. A bus goes up in flames, a spangle of children turn to dust, and the hawks descend, ready to peddle their urns, flowers, and corpse makeup, for the event that any bodies survived intact. Times, however, have changed, and the new profiteers chase buses with cameras. Reality shows like Waiting to Explode, The Prevalence of Cliffs, and Roadways Littered with Spikes have captured the attention of the nation, and this is a disgrace. Bus crashes may be as inevitable as war, but at least in our more honorable recent past we didn’t send sensationalist reality crews to document the bloodshed in Iraq. Oh, the moorings we’ve lost.
