The occasion of a bus throwing itself off a cliff and into a pile of sharp rocks is, in modern society, one of the few causes for reflection that we retain. TV has lost its ability to instill wonder. Books have failed to keep up with our brains. Sports are too fraught with equipment, carpooling, and expense. None of these pastimes cause us to reflect anymore. Bus crashes, however, occasionally manage to strike a nerve. One enthusiast put it this way: “At least with a bus crash, there’s a chance that I’ll feel something. And you know? Sometimes I really do. Like there was this one time when a kid onboard certainly knew his bus would crash and I saw him throw his dog out the window just before his bus threw itself into a post office. And that stuck, you know? It was, I suppose, poignant.”
